It’s that time again. The Local 709 Annual Picnic will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2008. Be sure to mark this on your calendar. We will have great food, games for the kids, bingo and lots of door prizes. Each Local 709 member in attendance will receive one door prize ticket and the member must be present to claim the prize. For those who have not attended our picnic before, it is held at Gemmrig Park in Long Beach, at the back of the Long Beach Town Center. The park is part of the Long Beach PD facility and is adjacent to El Dorado Park A map and directions are enclosed on a separate page. Also, if anyone has an old classic car they would like to show off at the picnic, give me a call and I will save you a parking space for it. We are also busy in negotiations with the NFSA contractors. Our contract expires August 31, 2008. In anticipation of lengthy meetings, we are postponing the August 4th Union Meeting to sometime later in the month so that we may present the offer at that time. We will notify you either in the newsletter or by post card when we have a date for presentation of the contract.
A Special Called Meeting for the Third Reading and Vote on the Amended Article 3 By-Laws Changes will be held on Monday, July 7, 2008 at the Local 709 James Duffy III Meeting Hall at 5:30 pm. Please see the enclosed copy of the Amended Resolution.
Working Rules state all United Association members shall report to the Business Manager or acting officer in his place for a work referral before reporting to a job site. In the event that a member fails to report for a work referral, he shall be in violation of this section. Please call me or one of our Business Agents, not the secretaries. They are not responsible. If we are not in the office, we can always be reached by calling our cell phone numbers and we will respond as soon as possible.
Congratulations to Amanda Holt as Winner of California Pipe Trades $2,500 Scholarship. We are sure that our Local 709 brother and Amanda’s father, Glen Holt is very proud.

Monthly Base Dues can now be paid automatically from your Building Trades Federal Credit Union account. You never have to worry about being late again. Call Judy or Maribel at the hall for information on setting this up.
Dodger Night is Friday, August 1, 2008 versus the Arizona Diamondbacks. The time is 7:40 pm. The tickets are sold out. We went through 700 in record time! Hope to see you there.
The Independence Day Holiday will be observed on Friday, July 4, 2008. This is a Union Holiday and all work will be paid at the double-time rate. Please drive safely and enjoy the long weekend.
